Auburn-Washburn Superintendent of Schools Announces Retirement

Auburn-Washburn Superintendent of Schools Dr. Scott McWilliams has announced his retirement, effective July 31, 2026, following more than three decades of service in public education.

Before joining Auburn-Washburn in 2015, Dr. McWilliams built a distinguished career serving as a mathematics teacher, assistant principal, principal, and executive director of human resources. He has often reflected on the meaning he found in each role, noting the impact and positive influence they allowed him to have on students, staff, and the broader community.

As superintendent, Dr. McWilliams has guided Auburn-Washburn through a decade of remarkable growth and achievement. In April 2022, he led the passage of a $145 million bond election, which paved the way for transformational construction projects across the district. Under his leadership and guidance, Auburn-Washburn has expanded its early childhood education program, opened a second middle school, and launched the Innovation Center at Washburn Rural High School to broaden career and technical education opportunities for students.

"Dr. McWilliams has served our community with tremendous dedication and vision," said Board of Education President Jeremy Wiltz. "His commitment to our students, staff, and families has shaped the future of our district. We are deeply grateful for his leadership and service."

In a message this morning to staff and families, Dr. McWilliams reflected on his time as superintendent. "Serving as your superintendent has been the honor of a lifetime. Over the past eleven years, we've faced challenges none of us could have imagined and celebrated milestones that have shaped the identity of this district. Through it all, we've remained grounded in what makes Auburn-Washburn so special: collaboration, respect, open communication, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every child."

He also expressed gratitude to the community. "My wife Heather and I are deeply thankful for what this community has given to our family. Since joining Auburn-Washburn in 2015, our three daughters have thrived under the guidance of remarkable teachers, coaches, mentors, and friends. Each is now a proud Washburn Rural graduate, and that is a direct reflection of the incredible people in this district. We will always treasure the warmth, kindness, and support we have felt here."

The Auburn-Washburn Board of Education has begun planning for the transition, which will include a comprehensive search for the district's next superintendent. The Board anticipates naming a successor in spring 2026, ensuring a smooth transition in leadership.
